Red Phoenix Judo Club History

Red Phoenix Judokwai was formed by Mick & Val Green and Kevin Venus in 1991 and was based at old arley. the club has outgrown the centre and is now based at Higham Lane School, Nuneaton.
The club started with an old canvas mat in need of constant repair, and many a night was spent with half dozen or so parents sat with a cup of tea in one hand while they sewed up the holes like fishermen mending their nets.
Then the club were awarded from the lottery grant - enough money to buy a new mat.

Mick also ran Nuneaton Judo Club for over 35 years. The two clubs finally combined at the end of 2005. The club is now known as Red Phoenix Judokwai and now has (with juniors, seniors and members of staff) 140 members.

Due to the growth of the club it's Thursday night training has been moved to Higham Lane School which provides circuit and strength training for the competition players.

During it’s 17 years, Red Phoenix Judokwai has produced 4 National Junior Champions and has had National Squad Cadets, 4 of which are on the current World Class Start Programme.

During Nuneaton Judo Clubs long history the club has also had, or helped to produce players that have gone onto European Level, Olympic Squads and also a Commonwealth Champion.
Mick now runs, along with his coaching staff and committee, a very successful and ever growing club.
With Mick’s  and Adam's job as a full time school’s coaches for the British Judo Association and with Mick's involvement with Leicester Tigers Rugby Club's Eite player programme there is a flow of children coming into the club.

The club now competes all over the country and has over the last 5 years competed as a club abroad.
